Prayer

My God, I am yours for time and eternity.
Teach me to cast myself entirely
into the arms of your loving Providence
with a lively, unlimited confidence in your compassionate, tender pity.
Grant, O most merciful Redeemer,
That whatever you ordain or permit may be acceptable to me.
Take from my heart all painful anxiety;
let nothing sadden me but sin,
nothing delight me but the hope of coming to the possession of You
my God and my all, in your everlasting kingdom.
Amen.

This week’s prayer is the “Suscipe”, a prayer that is particularly special for the Sisters of Mercy as in that the early sisters used to pray with their foundress, Mother Catherine McAuley.

On Tuesday, I was privileged to take a number of College student leaders and staff to the Academy Mary Immaculate, Fitzroy, (the oldest Catholic girls secondary school in Victoria) for a mass to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the death of Mother Ursula Frayne, the first Sister of Mercy to land in Australia in 1846.

SHC Music News

Last night, the Mary Moloney Theatre was full of families and students who were entertained by a rich offering of musical ensembles. This celebration of the performing arts is held every semester and provides the opportunity for students learning an instrument at Sacred Heart to perform as part of an ensemble – such events provide invaluable lessons in collaboration as well as unique opportunities to meet students from a range of year levels. Congratulations to each of SHC’s fabulous instrumental music team for your leadership of the night and especially to Angus Smith and Kai Li who MC’d the evening.  Full report and photos will be in next Newsletter edition.

At the close of the performance, I was able to announce the appointment of a new Head of Music for Sacred Heart College. Mr Josh McGuffie will join the College next term with responsibility for all aspects of the College’s Music program. Josh is currently Head of Senior School Music at Girton Grammar in Bendigo and is looking forward to growing the already rich music offerings at SHC.

Online Enrolments

In recent days, the College has opened its online enrolment portal which is available through the College website (www.shckyneton.catholic.edu.au). The portal provides a more convenient access point for parents and families looking to lodge an enrolment application form as well as details of accompanying documents required to be submitted.

A reminder to all current and prospective families that enrolment applications for Year 7 2027 (students currently in Grade 5) close on Friday 25 July 2025. Further details can be obtained by contacting the College Registrar, Ms Rowena Rokesky-Alder (rralder@shckyneton.catholic.edu.au) on 54211200.

As we draw towards the end of Semester 1, all students are to be congratulated for their many efforts and achievements both in and beyond the classroom.

Beginning from next week, students in most year levels will embark on their Semester 1 exams. These are an opportunity to experience the exam process, and to become familiar with exam expectations. All students are encouraged to recognise the exam period as a time to consolidate what they have learned, and to build constructive habits for personal study and preparation. In Years 10 and 11, the exams will be held in Quambi. In Years 8 and 9, the exams will be held in Home Group classrooms. Further details have been sent out via year level specific communication.

Semester 1 Reports will be made available via PAM in the first week of Term 3. Much of the information that these reports will include is already available via live reporting of Assessment Tasks on SIMON and PAM. Reports provide a snapshot of a given moment in time, and offer material for conversation about the ongoing story of learning and growth. We encourage families to use reports and other feedback as talking points that lead to affirming areas of strength, and to addressing areas of challenge in partnership with us.

In the coming weeks, teachers will be nominating students to be considered for a Learning Achievement Award. The spirit of these awards is to recognise and celebrate the many forms that success can take, and to highlight the quiet efforts that our students bring into the school community each day. In 2024, the categories from which a student might receive a Learning Achievement Award were:

  • Substantial growth in learning

  • Determination and perseverance

  • Independence of learning

In preparation for this year’s awards, our Senior Academic Captains have nominated some further categories for consideration during the nomination process.

Recipients of the Semester 1 Learning Achievement Awards will be celebrated at a dedicated assembly in Week 3 of Term 3.

Ursula Frayne 140 Year Memorial Mass June 10, 2025

June 9, 2025, marked the 140th anniversary of Ursula Frayne’s death. On June 10, Sacred Heart Kyneton and other Victorian Mercy schools gathered together to celebrate Ursula’s life through a memorial mass presented by the staff and students of the Academy of Mary Immaculate in Fitzroy. During the Mass, we heard inspiring words from Fr. Michael McEntee, Principal Sr. Mary Maloney and the Director of Faith and Mission Hannah Hale. We were privileged to experience the beautiful singing by the Academy's choir and listen to Bob Ballinger play on the harp that once belonged to Ursula Frayne herself. We appreciated learning more about our founder, Mother Usrula Frayne.

Ursula Frayne was the leader of the first group of Mercy Sisters to arrive in Perth, Australia, in 1846. On the 2nd February of the same year, she opened her first Mercy school- Mercedes College, Perth. After spending 5 years in Fremantle, Ursula relocated to Melbourne which provided her another opportunity to help those in need. Following in the footsteps of Catherine McAuley, Ursula established many schools, orphanages for vulnerable children and shelters for people who were often marginalized. After living out a life of mercy, guided by Jesus and the gospels Ursula died in 1885. Following her death, a memorial chapel was built to honor her life and achievements. This is where she now rests.

Following the mass, we were invited to a guided tour of the school where we had a chance to converse with other Mercy students. Throughout this experience we were privileged enough to have Mercy Sister, Sr Madeline Duckett join us for the day. This experience has left us with a profound appreciation and gratitude for the work of Ursula Frayne: a remarkable woman whose dedication deeply shaped our country and our school community.

Thank you to everyone in our Sacred Heart College community who supported our Mercy in May goods drive for McAuley Community Services for Women.

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we were able to donate over $500 and almost 10 washing baskets full of essential items to support women and children who are rebuilding their lives after experiencing family violence.

The donations were delivered to McAuley Services just in time for the long weekend and will go directly to families in need.

The month of May is traditionally a time when the Church honours Mary, the mother of Jesus, recognising her as a person of courage, strength, and faith . We also mark Mother’s Day during May, which makes it an especially meaningful time to support women who are doing it tough. Like Mary seeking support from her cousin Elizabeth, McAuley offers women and children a place of safety, welcome, and compassion.

Through this campaign, our school community has lived out the heart of our Mercy values and reflected the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, especially the dignity of the human person and the preferential option for the poor and marginalised.

A special thank you to our Faith and Mercy Justice student leadership teams, who helped drive the initiative and encouraged others to get involved.

This campaign was a great example of our community coming together to put Mercy into action.

Thank you again for your support.

Félicitations

On Exchange in Japan - Inga Forester

Year 10 student, Inga Foerster, who is studying Japanese,  is currently on three months exchange in Tokyo, Japan. Inga, found some time to write back to her Year 10 class in Japanese. Here is the email that she wrote with a translation attached.

Hello!

I love Japan. Everything is so much fun. My host family is truly kind, and my host siblings are Primary school students and so cute. We always play cards and games together. On Saturdays, I have to go to school, but on Sundays I always go out with my host family, shopping, to the park, etc. Three weeks ago, I went to Tokyo Skytree. During Golden Week, I went camping and saw Mt Fuji. It was very beautiful.

School is fun but it is difficult. The teachers speak so fast, and all of the handouts are in kanji. The most difficult subjects are probably Japanese national language and maths. This week, everyone has exams, but I am not taking them.

I am a member of the art club. We have a club twice per week. On Fridays, periods 5 and 6, I have calligraphy class. It’s fun, but looking at it is much easier than writing it. I am making lots of friends, and everyone is so kind. However, I do miss everyone in Australia.

I have eaten so many different Japanese foods. I always eat sushi, ramen and udon, etc. They are very delicious.

How is everyone in the Japanese class?

From Inga.

As a part of our studies in RE this term focused on ‘Finding our Inner Peace,’ Year 10 students took part in a series of four tailored lessons to deepen their understanding of a specific type of prayer. This year, students had the opportunity to choose from a range of teacher-led offerings, including: meditative prayer, nature journaling, zentangles art, prayer through music and dance, peace through reading, and prayer through protest and poetry.

Some students share their experiences:
In Mr Gaskell’s meditation group, we explored the many ways to meditate and the benefits of meditation. His classes provided an understanding on how meditation can connect us to God through quiet contemplation. After the initial lesson, the class split into groups and explored a type of meditation that they would then share with the class in the last lessons. We participated in and enjoyed a wide range of meditation, from walking, yoga, breathing and drawing led by each group.  Simone D and Elizabeth H

In the nature journaling group with Ms. Brennan, we sat outside in the natural environment and drew leaves, trees and anything natural that our minds came to. As a class, we all appreciated the time to be quiet, as well as enjoying the nature that surrounded us. Through nature journaling we learnt that through drawing nature we can be connected to God in all different ways. The lessons we had were very enjoyable, and a good way to learn about different forms of prayer.  Maisie S

Thank you to all the Y10 RE teachers who created these unique lesson offerings for us.

The 2025 Deb Ball was such a special night and something we’d all been looking forward to for months. After weeks of practising routines and getting everything organised, it was so rewarding to finally step out onto the dancefloor in front of our friends, families, and teachers.

When it was time to be presented and start our dances, we were all pretty nervous, but once the music started, it all just flowed. We had rehearsed so much that it became second nature. There were a few shaky moments, but that just made it more fun and real. Everyone was smiling and laughing, and you could really feel how proud everyone was, especially the parents.

One of the best parts was getting to do it with our friends and seeing everyone so dressed up and happy. There were so many laughs backstage, and it felt like we were all sharing something really meaningful together.

We’d like to give a massive thank you to Gayle and Andrew, who taught us all the dances. Their patience and positivity made rehearsals fun (even when we messed up the same steps a hundred times). They really made a huge difference.

Also, a big thank you to Mr Diamond and Ms Bratovic for all their help and support in making the night happen. From behind-the-scenes planning to helping us on the night, we really appreciate everything they did to make it run so smoothly. Also, thank you to Mr Weir for being such a great MC. He kept the night moving with humour and made everyone feel relaxed and comfortable.

Finally, thank you to all the families, friends, and teachers who supported us, not just on the night but throughout the whole process. Whether you helped us practice at home or were in the crowd cheering us on, it meant a lot.

The Deb Ball was definitely one of the highlights of the year. It was a night full of laughter, dancing, and memories we’ll keep with us for a long time.

Students Clean Up with a Lunchtime Scavenger Hunt  -  Kate Hemphill 9C

Thursday 5 June was World Environment Day! Our whole school got involved in a rubbish scavenger hunt at lunch to care for our common home. All they had to do was collect as much litter as possible from around the school grounds and put it into bags. Then, we weighed the rubbish-filled bags to find out whose was the heaviest. It was a fun and active way to help clean up our school while also doing something good for the planet and caring for our world.

It was awesome seeing so many students running around with gloves and bags, really getting into it and working together. Lots of people got very competitive and teamed up in groups to try to get the most rubbish they possibly could. It was great to see so much effort being put into helping the environment.

A big congratulations to Alice McKenzie and Cara Courtney, whose bag weighed the most and took out first place and won a $25 canteen voucher! You did an amazing job!

We also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated. And a special thanks to Mrs Cincotta, Mrs Violante, the Green Team and the Sustainability Leaders who helped organise the event.

12 VCE VM – Escape Room Team Challenge.

On Thursday 5 June the Year 12 VCE VM students went on an excursion to The Great Escape in Bendigo, to participate in an escape room challenge, as a part of their Work Related Skills Unit 3 studies.

The basis of the escape room challenge was for the students to work as a team to solve all the clues for their particular room, and successfully exit the room within the one hour time limit. Area of study 3 for WRS is ‘Communication and Collaboration’, so participating in an escape room challenge – as a TEAM – was a great activity in which the students could participate. All three teams performed really well – managing to escape within the allotted time period, successfully, and displaying sound communication and teamwork skills whilst doing so. The students now need to draw on their experiences within the escape room challenge to respond to their WRS Assessment Task 3 – Team Challenge Reflection.

Thank you to Mr Paxton and Mrs Freeman who also accompanied the students on the excursion. Well done everyone.

On Wednesday 11 June, our Senior Sacred Heart College 1 Team comprising of Charleigh Ager, Sierra Benedict and Matilda Matthews debated against Hume Central Secondary College on the topic "that the government should penalise (e.g. fine) individuals who take more than two flights per year". It was a very close debate with our team winning on a technicality this round.

Our debaters give up a lot of their free time to participate in this activity. They are a very committed group who always represent our College in true Mercy style.

Girls Senior AFL

The Senior Girls Team departed SHC on Friday 30 May to represent our school in football. They played a strong four quarters, with a few Year 10s joining in to support. Lots of goals were scored with an unfortunate loss. The girls had a brilliant game, and put up a strong fight. Their skills and teamwork shined bright and most of all they all had lots of fun for their final year at SHC!

Intermediate Girls AFL

The Year 9 and 10 Intermediate Girls Football Team had a cracker of a day on Friday 30 May, with one win and one loss. They won their first game against Wallan, with a whopping 50 points on them and some amazing team work and effort was put in. With the little amount of practice they did as a team, they really came together throughout the match and played an awesome game!

We had a lot of fun rotating the positions and letting all the girls try out different areas on the oval. Their second game they played Mount Ridley College where they played hard and fought well, but sadly not quite getting there in the end. There was some amazing play in the second game with lots of the inexperienced girls getting lots of ball time and really trying their hardest, despite not fully knowing how to play. It was awesome to see all the girls lifting each other up and having a great time, even though they lost. The sportsmanship was fantastic and it was lovely to see so many of the girls have such a good time.

Junior Girls AFL

The Juniors Girls had an awesome day with two wins and only one loss at the end. Sadly, they didn't make it to the next round, but they fought hard and had some great clearances and play. They showed lots of great sportsmanship and it was terrific to see them all putting in their best efforts. Their teamwork and determination was amazing, and we loved to see so many junior girls having a kick and enjoying themselves.

Year 8 Boys AFL - Julius Gorzkowski

The Year 8 boys participated in the first round of the interschool AFL on Tuesday 3 June. It was a very chilly day at Roxburgh Park, and luckily the forecast rain managed to hold off until the end.

The first game played in the pool was against Mount Ridley College. It was a very dominant performance by Sacred Heart as we won twelve goals to one point.

Next up was a game against Wallan and we managed to win six goals to one.

The last game was a final against the winners of the two pools. Sacred Heart was up against its neighbours Kyneton Secondary College. It was a slow start but our boys picked up the pace and had a clear win with seven goals to one. Sacred Heart College are through to the next round of competition which will be announced later this year.  Well done boys!

Year 8 Soccer  -  Sierra Benedict

There were illnesses on the day that prevented the boys from having a full team, but while they faced these challenges and didn't secure victories in their matches, their commitment, perseverance and sportsmanship was evident throughout the day.   In true team spirit, some of the girls even stepped forward to play for the boys!

The girls' team showcased exceptional skill and determination, winning majority of their games and advancing to the finals of their competition. Although they were narrowly defeated by two goals, their journey to the final was a testament to their hard work and talent they were able to perform on the day. Special thanks to Sierra and Rhys for the guidance they conducted as coaches and the advice the team heard from the sidelines.

Recently the Year 9 Food Technology classes completed a Multicultural Foods Design Brief where they could research a country of their choice. Whilst investigating their selected country they gained an insight into the common ingredients used and how food is typically prepared, cooked and served. Students explored common savoury recipes from their selected countries then had an opportunity to cook a dish of their choice in a practical lesson.

The kitchen came alive with a large variety of ingredients, cooking methods and aromas spanning from all parts of the world including pizzas, a variety of different pasta dishes, bao buns, sushi, enchiladas and taco bowls, kebabs and pretzels.

Well done year 9’s what an amazing effort.
