Father of all,
You gave our Aboriginal People the Dreaming
You have spoken to them through their beliefs,
You then made your love clear to them in the person of Jesus.
We thank you for your care of these people.
You own them. You are their hope.
Make them strong as they face the problems of change
We ask you to help us, the people of Australia,
To listen to them and respect their culture.
Make the knowledge of you grow strong in all people
So that you can be at home in all of us,
And so that we can make a home for everyone in our land.
Amen.
This week’s prayer recognises national NAIDOC Week celebrations that will be held across Australia next week to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
Yesterday, the College made the decision to ask Year 8 students (Thursday) and Year 9 students (today) to stay at home. This week, we have had a substantial number of teachers unwell with influenza, Covid and winter colds affecting many. With so many teachers away, we could not guarantee that all classes could be covered even with the use of CRTs.
Related to this, we have a number of student free days planned for Term 3. These dates relate to College events that will have an impact on the availability of either teaching staff or classroom spaces, namely the Year 10 Alpine Camp and the Frayne Speech Festival. As a result, remote learning days are planned as follows:
Specific correspondence will be sent to families early next term confirming these dates and details for the days.
Yesterday, Claire Freeman was recognised for her outstanding achievement in VCE Unit 3 & 4 Environmental Science in 2024. Claire was one of several hundred students to receive a Premier’s Award which celebrates students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Claire received a perfect study of 50 for Environmental Science and an overall ATAR of 98.55. Claire is having a gap year in 2025 which will include significant travel overseas before returning to study a Bachelor of Psychology at Latrobe University Bendigo.
We congratulate Claire on this outstanding achievement!
Second term for all students concludes tomorrow with arrangements for the start of next term detailed below:
Friday 4 July All students conclude at 2.30pm for mid-year holidays
Monday 21 July Student Free Day (RE PL Day)
Tuesday 22 July All students commence Term 3
As many in the community will be aware, Victoria is struggling with significant teacher shortages and the prospect that such shortages will continue for the next three – five years. Sacred Heart College has been privileged to continue to attract high quality teaching applicants over recent years; a trend that reflects the College’s excellent reputation as well as the opportunities available in the Macedon Ranges.
However, the College needs to be proactive in ensuring that high quality applicants continue to join the College as enrolment numbers increase. To support this, Sacred Heart College will be holding an open day for prospective teaching staff. This initiative will allow prospective staff to see the College, meet senior staff and hear about the school and our plans moving forward.
I encourage any members of the Sacred Heart College community who are teachers or may have friends in the teaching profession to consider registering for the event. It is being held on Saturday 9 August 2025 from 11.00am – 12.30pm. Full details will be available on the College website from the start of next term.
Hoping all students, families and friends of the Sacred Heart College community enjoy a safe, restful and warm mid-year break.
Yours in Mercy,
Dr Darren Egberts

During Term 2 the Year 10 PE classes have been learning about the creation of specific training programs to meet the needs of an athlete or client. To finish the topic, they had to create their own Training Programs as an Assessment Task. To finish off the term we have joined in with a Pilates class at SHC and an Aqua Aerobics class at the Kyneton Aquatic Centre to demonstrate two organised training program activities that are designed to meet a fitness goal.
Pilates:
Shelly Knott, a local Pilates instructor lead a full body workout for the students to show how a training program can focus on bodyweight strength and does not need to be high intensity outdoor exercise. The students struggled their way through stretches and bodyweight exercises to enjoy their full workout. A big thank you to Shelly for volunteering her time. A few sore muscles the next day!
Aqua Aerobics:
The Kyneton Aquatic Centre led both classes in a general fitness aqua session aimed at supporting the maintenance of physical abilities. The students worked hard in the pool (they were not easy workouts) in a full session created for beginners.
The students enjoyed the opportunities and have a new appreciation for consistent participators in Pilates and Aqua Aerobics classes!

Wishing Our Jarlmadangah Burru Immersion Team Well
Toward the end of the school holidays, eight Year 11 students and two staff members, Chris Morton and Kellie Boorman, will set off on a special immersion experience to the remote Aboriginal community of Jarlmadangah Burru, located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
The group will spend just over a week in the region, with Nyikina Mangala Community School (NMCS) as their main base.
NMCS is a vibrant, independent Aboriginal school that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Nyikina and Mangala people. It offers a unique learning environment that combines strong academic skills with deep connections to country, language, and culture, supported closely by community elders and families.
Immersions like this are a powerful expression of our Mercy values. They invite us to step beyond our own experiences, meet others with openness and humility, and embrace the true spirit of hospitality.
In preparation, our students have shown wonderful initiative and creativity through their ‘Dare to Donate’ fundraiser. They are raising funds to purchase a special gift for the community as a gesture of gratitude for the school community's hospitality. Staff have courageously signed up for challenges such as singing at assembly, a dance battle, and an ice bucket challenge, amongst others. The three dares with the most donations will go ahead in Term 3. At last count, nearly $300 had been raised which is a fantastic achievement and one that shows the generosity and spirit of our school community.
We are incredibly proud of these students and staff for their commitment and willingness to engage deeply with others. We wish them safe travels and a rewarding, transformative experience. Our prayers and support go with them on this important journey.
A Blessing for the Journey
God of Mercy,
as they step forward on their journey,
teach them to walk gently on this ancient land.
May their feet fall softly upon the earth,
and may their hearts be open to your quiet voice within.
Grant them compassion, that they may feel the joys and struggles carried in each story.
Guide them in justice, to honour truth and stand in solidarity with their brothers and sisters in need.
Fill them with respect, for the wisdom of Elders, the teachings they share,
and the deep spirit of culture and community.
Shape them in hospitality, to receive each encounter as a gift,
and to offer warmth and presence without expectation.
Inspire them to serve, with hands ready to help and hearts eager to learn.
Gift them with courage, to enter into spaces of challenge,
and to be transformed by what they hear and see.
May they return renewed, echoing the quiet call of reconciliation,
and walking always in the light of Mercy.
Amen.

On Wednesday 2 July, a group of 17 Year 8 girls competed in the Year 8 girls netball competition at Boardman Stadium in Sunbury. Our girls were divided into 2 teams, an A and a B team. Each team played 5 games, versing a range of schools including Craigieburn, Mount Ridley and Wallan.
Both teams played extremely well, winning all of their games by considerable amounts. In the end, after winning all their five games, both of our teams ended up playing each other in a final. The A team came out with a six goal win in the end and will progress to the next round.
We are very proud of all the girls. They all showed great skill, respect and sportsmanship. We also want to extend a huge thank you to our Year 10 B team coaches Ruby and Minty.
Unfortunately the NMR round didn’t turn out to be as successful as the Mickleham round for our senior boys.
With quite a number missing due to injury and outside commitments, this made the games more challenging as we were forced to play with 17 players. To the boys credit they gave it their all in both games but didn’t have the numbers to match it with the other schools. Well done to all who played!
Game 1 SHC 12 Northcote 42
Game 2 SHC 6 Montmorency 32
On Thursday 3 July the Senior Boys Basketball competition was held at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium. We played three strong games of basketball against Craigieburn, Mount Ridley and Wallan. The team had two convincing wins and a very close competitive game against Mt Ridley where the boys won by 7 points in the last minutes. Overall, it was a successful day with the team moving through to the next round in August.
Some highlights of the day were Tyler Ball's dunks, Rubens half court shot and some great team plays from the team as a whole.
Congratulations to all, especially to the Year 12s in the final attempt at the competition.

At Sacred Heart College, we value the partnerships formed between families, the College and Community. Our intention is to support parents/carers/guardians while raising awareness of the benefits of engaging in their child’s education. Studies have shown that a family’s engagement has a direct, positive impact on a child’s learning success.
The aim of the Sacred Heart College’s Parent Engagement Partnership is to strengthen the collaboration between school, families and the broader community, by providing Professional Learning through quality presenters on a variety of current educational topics. These opportunities can provide parents with knowledge, strategies and skills to support their child.
Our next session is an online session called 'Navigating the Digital Playground' on Tuesday 5 August. See below for details and booking link.

Year 7 RE
Year 7s have been busy creating visual representations of one of Jesus’ parables, as a part of their study of ‘Responding to the Good News’ in their RE classes. In completing this assessment task, students learned how to navigate their Bibles, how to understand the message of a Parable, and how these messages are still relevant for today’s audience.
Well done Year 7s! Please take a look at some examples of their excellent and creative work.
Year 11 RE
“Who is my neighbour?” This is a question that Year 11 RE students have been exploring, as a part of their recent studies focusing on the marginalised in our world, and how to respond to matters of injustice.
To deepen this concept, students heard from Ms Liz Payne, who previously worked with ACRATH (Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans). Ms Payne explored the concept of modern slavery in its many forms worldwide, including the scourge of human trafficking and forced marriage. Her presentation was well received by students:
“The talk on human trafficking was eye-opening and made me think about how real and close to home the issue can be. I learned how important it is to stay aware and speak up…”
Kobey D
We encourage parents to be in conversation with your Year 11 student about what they heard during the presentation, and what thoughts and questions it may have stirred for them.
Thank you to Ms Payne and the Year 11 RE teaching team for your important work.

Artists throughout history have drawn animals, whether being their pets or other people's Pets. They often show the love the artist has for their 'family member' and illustrate the personality of the pet.
The paintings that Year 8 Art students completed, are of the students' pets. The theme of the task was 'Pets with Personality' and the students worked hard to show some of the characters of their pets.

Our Year 7 Robotics class has been buzzing with excitement this term, thanks to the fantastic new LEGO Education SPIKE Prime kits that were purchased this year! These cutting-edge sets have brought a whole new level of innovation and hands-on learning to our robotics program. LEGO Education SPIKE Prime is a dynamic STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning tool that combines colourful LEGO building elements with easy-to-use hardware and an intuitive drag-and-drop coding language, based on Scratch. The heart of the system is the programmable Hub, which features input/output ports, a light matrix, Bluetooth connectivity, a speaker, and sensors, allowing students to bring their creations to life and interact with the world around them.
Our Year 7 students have fully embraced the new kits, diving headfirst into exploring a diverse range of different builds. From designing basic vehicles to more complex robotic arms and pinball machines, their imaginations have been running wild. The next exciting step has been learning to program these creations to make them move. Using the accessible block-based coding, students are learning fundamental programming concepts such as sequences, loops, and conditional statements. It's been incredible to see their faces light up as their carefully constructed robots respond to their code, performing a variety of movements and tasks. The new LEGO Education SPIKE Prime kits are proving to be an invaluable addition to our school, inspiring our young innovators to think like engineers and programmers.
