Mercy Day
If we utter aloud the word mercy,
standing, each of us, by an open window
anywhere we are in the world,
then the word mercy will carry on the soundwaves
onwards and unceasing,
through the air of the wounded world.
And maybe, when it takes flight
into deed and kindness, justice and effort,
it will effect a healing, a hope and a blessing.
It may call the homeless home,
it may coax to hope the betrayed and broken,
it may ease the burdened earth.
Listen for it, the repeated word mercy, on this Mercy day,
Listen for its neighbourly dialects and global idiom.
Imagine those who, like you, are saying it aloud,
and those who need to hear it, today- the word- mercy.
One word, one deed of justice, one kind effort at a time.
Creator God, sustainer of life,
Jesus, our companion Word,
Spirit, who, like the air, inspires,
give us the simple daring this day
to say and to be Mercy.

Mercy Day is celebrated across the globe on the feast of Our Lady of Mercy (24 September) with Sacred Heart College celebrating the day with a whole school mass in Quambi.

Senior Cabinet 2027
Last week, I was privileged to announce the successful candidates for the 2027 SHC Senior Cabinet. Congratulations both to those who were successful but also to those who applied for a role but were unsuccessful; the 2027 application process was particularly notable for the large number of applicants and the quality of their presentations.

2027 SHC Laptop Parent Purchase Program
Significant work is currently underway selecting preferred devices for 2027 Year 7 & 10 students. Next year will be the fourth iteration of the SHC Parent Purchase program with a number of significant changes being introduced, these include:
· A single laptop model selected for both Year 7 & 10 students. The College has determined that a more expensive device with higher specifications is not necessary for our senior students.
· This device is expected to cost $1500-$1600. To guarantee this price, parents will be expected to have ordered the device by mid-December.
· The College notes that computer prices have increased substantially in the past twelve months due to a global computer chip shortage.
· The College will allow families to have the cost of a device added to family fee accounts and be paid off during the following twelve-month period.
Full details on the Parent Purchase program including costs and access to the purchase portal will be distributed in coming days.
Student and Staff Activities
With term three coming to a close, there have been plenty of activities in and outside of Sacred Heart. Activities of particular note include:
Congratulations to a small group of students and staff who were asked to present to the annual Mercy Ministry Companions Conference in Melbourne. The conference brings together leaders from across Australia’s various Mercy ministries with Sacred Heart reflecting on twenty years of partnership with the Jarlmadangah Burru community in the Kimberley.
The College’s rich Music program was showcased through last week’s wonderful Ensemble Evening as well as this week’s VCE Music Recital. Congratulations to all students and music teachers under the direction of Head of Music, Josh McGuffie.
Last week saw the combined celebration of Wellbeing and Arts Week while this week has enjoyed plenty of fun activities through HPE Week.
Good luck to all our senior students for whom the coming holidays will focus on revision classes, practice examinations and tutorials ahead of VCAA exams in October and November.

Celebrating Wellbeing Week and Looking Ahead to Term 4
As we reach the final week of Term 3, this edition looks back on a wonderful Wellbeing Week and looks ahead to three important updates for the holidays and the start of Term 4: our move to the summer uniform, an upgrade to the Hillary toilets, and a note on road safety near the College.
Celebrating Wellbeing Week
Wellbeing Week was once again one of the true highlights of our calendar, filled with a wonderful energy of kindness, wellbeing and celebration throughout the day. Students came together to paint a mural for our Wellbeing House, enjoyed a visit from Farmer Daryl's mobile animal farm, added colour and conversation with a henna artist, and marked RUOK Day by swapping their uniforms for comfy clothes, a simple and genuine way to check in with each other. The week also saw students fundraising for RUOkay Day. None of this happens without the dedication of many people. Particular thanks go to our Wellbeing Captains, Sophie Dunn and Elissa Balancy Mazou in the Senior School, and Anna Dunn, Matilda Gibson and Molly Cusack in the Junior School, who led the week with such heart and creativity. Thank you also to our Wellbeing Counsellors, Rene Spence, Maddy Wood, Samantha Sequeira and Paul Hopkins, for the energy and support they gave the day, and to our Arts staff and Art Technician Peter Ashman for their collaboration and support throughout the week. It was a genuine team effort, and it showed.
Summer Uniform for Term 4
As we move into Term 4, students will return to the summer uniform. As it has been some time since it was last worn, we encourage families to check over the holidays that the fit and length are still correct, and to visit the uniform shop if a new size is needed. Facilities Update: Hillary Toilets
Work will soon begin on rebuilding the Hillary toilets. This project is expected to take several weeks and will continue into the start of Term 4. Interim portable toilets, including an ambulant/accessible toilet, will be in place and ready for student use from the first day of Term 4. We appreciate the community's understanding while this important upgrade is completed.
A Reminder on Road Safety
We have received a small number of reports regarding the safety of students crossing roads near the College, particularly on High Street at busy times. We will share further information at the start of Term 4, but wanted to raise this now as a timely reminder to have a conversation at home over the break about road rules, and the importance of using the designated crossing zone when crossing High Street.

Our College community gathered for our 'Our Lady of Mercy Mass,' remembering Mary, the mother of Jesus, under a title especially dear to the Sisters of Mercy. Catherine McAuley had a deep devotion to Our Lady of Mercy, and the Sisters took their name from the mercy they sought to bring to others.
We were pleased to be joined once again by Sisters Carol and Madeline, and to welcome Fr Aurelio from Castlemaine, who celebrated Mass with us for the first time. Having the Sisters with us makes the Mercy story feel close: a tradition that began in Ireland almost 200 years ago and continues here in Kyneton.
Mercy Day is celebrated by Mercy communities around the world on 24 September. On that date in 1827, the doors of Catherine’s first House of Mercy opened on Baggot Street in Dublin. Next year will mark 200 years since that beginning, giving us a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how far the Mercy story has travelled and where it might lead us next.
Thank you to the students who volunteered for readings, the procession and other parts of the Mass. Service is one of our Mercy values, and stepping forward to help our community pray is a meaningful way to live it.
Our choir deserves special thanks. They worked hard to learn new Mercy themed songs and shared their gifts generously with us.
In the spirit of Mercy hospitality, we enjoyed donuts together afterwards. Later this year, we will also begin reinvigorating our local Mercy Day celebrations. We are starting small, with the hope of building something that will grow in the years ahead.
On Thursday 10 September Sacred Heart musicians presented their Annual Ensemble Showcase in the Mary Moloney Theatre. The full program is attached.
Our musicians would like to express their deepest appreciation to their families and friends for attending, to the Music Teachers for their guidance and expert advice and, to Zak and the IT team for their support during soundcheck.
Our musicians are now looking forward to preparing for both the Semester Two Instrumental Recital Evening on Monday 12 October and, the Music Leaders Concert on Wednesday 25 November.

Spotlight on a couple of the interesting webinars
I know that parenting a teenager can be tiring, a little stressful and an intense roller-coast of rapid change. I also know that it can also be so rewarding, especially once you understand what teen’s need. These videos are from a 2-part Webinar that is designed to help parents and carers embrace, connect with and enjoy this stage of life.
If you’ve recently found yourself saying, “Why are we still negotiating about this?” this webinar is for you.
Most kids, regardless of their age, are master negotiators! Their single minded, intentional drive can be difficult for parents to match, especially if we don’t upskill as they grow.
At the end of August and beginning of September, the Year 7 cohort went to the Melbourne Museum to experience the Rome exhibition, as well as learn about the classification of flora and fauna. Students went on a self-guided tour of the Wondrous Planet exhibition, learning about how different environments see adaptations of plants and animals in order to survive and thrive. Students also engaged in Ancient Rome workshops, using replicas of ancient artefacts to develop insightful questions about the past. The banquet and gods and goddesses sections of the Ancient Rome exhibition, were a particular highlight with the students.
Well done to the Year 7 cohort for showing the school values in the greater community.
Year 7 Student Reflection: 'Our Year 7 excursion to the Melbourne Museum was a great experience because we got to see the Ancient Rome exhibition and learn more about Ancient Rome, which we have been studying in History.'
The NMR Athletics Carnival, held at Meadowglen Athletics Track in Epping on 9 September, was a successful day despite recording our lowest attendance in many years, with approximately 22 students participating. Unfortunately, several students were unable to attend at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances.
While the cold and windy conditions presented an additional challenge, they did not stop a number of our students from achieving outstanding results and earning medals. All participants experienced a higher level of competition, which provided valuable insight into the standards required at this level. For many, it was an eye-opening experience and one they thoroughly enjoyed, helping them identify areas to focus on as they strive for even greater success in the future.
Congratulations to all students who represented the school and gave their best effort throughout the day.
A special thank you to Mr James Ryan for his ongoing support, and to our Year 2 Sport and Recreation students, Macy Gillett, Keeley Deveraux and Matilda Donald, for their assistance in managing the girls' triple jump event. Their contribution provided a valuable hands-on learning experience which could lead to bigger and better things in the future.
Well done to everyone involved on a day that showcased resilience, teamwork and determination.

It has been a very busy Term 3 in the library. Students have borrowed a total of 750 books, with congratulations going to 8E, who have borrowed the most items. The library has bought 132 books to add to our collection. These are then shown to and discussed with the students during their fortnightly reading sessions.
Student activities have continued throughout the term. These have included the Dungeons and Dragons club, Book Week competitions and a Dress-up day. Congratulations to Violet Donnelly, who wrote a wonderful piece for our short-story competition.
"To live without you is to live in echoes, an echo of your life now empty within mine. As I stare at our spot, cards scatter cold, I long for the fractals of light that you hold. A heart made of glass only breaks in the sun, but your icy stare chips my soul into shards. They pierce the spirit, as it wanders the hills, singing its ode in the hopes that you're near, The symphony of a story, an ode to a friend, who are we but a finished song? Echoing the melody we used to share".
Our library displays have featured books related to the television series, Alone, a Grand Final display which gave students the opportunity to vote for the team they think will win, and an extensive Book Week display.
Many students continue to use the library during recess and lunch time and we are looking forward to an equally productive term 4.
Year 12 Service Learning
As a part of their RE studies, Year 12 students participated in various service groups throughout Term 3. This was their way of showing courage and commitment, aligned with the Mercy values.
Services included: visiting and talking with the residents at RM Begg Kyneton, organising fun activities for visits to OLOR primary, making toys and crafts to donate to McAuley Services, offering peer support to our Year 7 students, and excursions focused on environmental stewardship. Thank you to the Year 12 RE teachers, OLOR, RM Begg, Year 7 teachers, and to our Year 12 students.
Here are some student reflections:
We worked closely with Year 7 students across several sessions, supporting them with classwork in Japanese and History. One of the most rewarding parts was seeing the Year 7 students become more confident in their learning. We also enjoyed getting to know the younger students and developing positive relationships with them. Our group demonstrated service by using the skills and knowledge we have developed throughout Year 12, alongside our school’s Mercy values. By giving our time, encouragement and assistance, particularly during assessment periods, we hoped we made the Year 7 students feel welcomed, supported and more confident within our school community. We were involved in making a collection of items - primarily toys - for children in housing or programs run by McAuley Community Services for Women and Children. A fundamental component of the process to support children who have often undergone immense hardship and trauma is play; through the felt puppets, crocheted animals and paddle-pop stick creations our group spent lessons developing. Knowing what we were putting together would be going to children in need connected ourselves directly to the issue in a way that wouldn't be possible through many other experiences. We had the privilege of spending our time at Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School. This allowed us to step outside our comfort zones and experience the fulfilment that comes with giving back to the community. We designed sport and craft activities to connect with the students including a sports round robin with the Grade 6s and a Daffodil Festival themed craft with the Grade 1s.
This experience gave us the chance to step away from the pressures of Year 12 and to spend time with the primary schoolers who were full of joy and excitement. We would like to thank Mr Matthews for supporting us through this experience and all his hard work gathering the supplies. Twenty-five young STEM leaders - Fifteen schools - One incredible day!
Recently Charles Meadows from Year 10 represent Sacred Heart College and Ballarat Tech School at the inaugural Tech Schools Victoria Student Leaders in STEM Forum.
Held at the Royal Society of Victoria as part of Inspiring Victoria’s National Science Week celebrations, the Forum brought together student delegates from 15 Victorian schools to develop their leadership, build connections and engage with STEM professionals and other young leaders.
Students met an extraordinary group of senior colleagues, including Victoria’s Lead Scientist Amanda Caples, university professors and Royal Society Fellows. They also heard from the Victorian Student Representative Council about student voice and how young people can use it to influence decisions and create change.
As one of six Ballarat delegates, Charles embraced the opportunity - contributing to discussions, asking thoughtful questions and building connections with their peers and STEM professionals. It was wonderful to see the confidence and leadership skills developed through the Ballarat Tech School Student Leadership program come to life in this state event. Well done Charles!
Festival of the Arts Wrap-Up
Our 2026 Festival of the Arts celebrated the many creative events already taking place across the school calendar.
The festival began with Achromatic, our Media Celebration Evening, which showcased an impressive range of student short films, animations and photography. This was followed by the VCE Theatre Studies Monologue Night during Well-Being Week, where students presented the monologues they have been preparing this semester ahead of their Theatre Studies examination on 6 October at the Darebin Arts Centre. The evening also featured a performance by the DramaLlamas, who presented a play devised in just 24 hours with the support of Kellie Tori.
It was wonderful to see Arts Captain Emily Turner, the driving force behind DramaLlamas, performing with the group. Emily began her drama journey at Sacred Heart in Year 7 and has since been involved in numerous productions, including a lead role in As You Like It last year. She has also completed both VCE Drama and VCE Theatre Studies.
The Arts Festival continued with a student mural painting workshop organised by our Arts and Well-Being Captains. Over several lunchtimes, students contributed handprints to create a vibrant rainbow mural that will be installed opposite the Well-Being House. Special thanks to Peter Ashman for preparing the plywood and purchasing supplies, and to Sophie Dunne, Charlotte Graham, and the student leaders who coordinated the project. We look forward to seeing the finished mural on display.
Music was also a major feature of the festival. Alongside the Music Ensembles Concert, we were delighted to welcome back former Sacred Heart student and professional musician Taylor Sheridan. Taylor performed for the whole school during recess and lunchtime, presented a concert for the Year 8 students, and shared valuable insights into his career in the music industry. He also ran a workshop with the Year 10 Music class, collaborating with students on his song Troubadour. We are incredibly grateful for Taylor’s generosity and continued connection with the school community.
The festival concluded with the Year 12 Music Recital Evening, where Unit 4 Music students performed the programs they will present in their final examinations next term. These performances reflected many months of dedication and hard work.
Thank you to our Arts Captains, Charlotte Graham and Emily Turner, and to everyone who attended and supported our events. We look forward to another exciting term, including the VCE Art Exhibition opening on 23 October at the newly established arts precinct at the Old Kyneton Primary School site.
Year 7 Jui Jitsu Program
It has been an eventful few weeks for the Year 7’s as they have been put through their paces by Kobe from Maroccolo Academy (Kyneton). The students have worked hard at developing their skills and techniques and have a great understanding of how to negotiate and reduce harm from bullies.
A big thanks to Kobe for all of his efforts and a special shout out to Som and Rufus for giving up their time to help our Year 7 program.
On Wednesday 9 September, our Year 7 and Year 8 debaters participated in online training provided by the Debaters Association of Victoria. Our students were instructed on the format of a debate, how a debate is scored and participated in practical activities to improve their critical thinking skills.
A special thanks to our senior debaters - Stella Egberts and Benjamin Knight who helped on the evening. It’s wonderful to see a large cohort of junior students join our Debating team this year.

Students with a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who served in the Australian Defence Force can qualify for scholarships worth up to $18,000 for uni or TAFE.
Veteran Descendant Scholarships
Digger Scholarships has a free searchable database of all 67 veteran-descendant scholarships and grants, with eligibility, closing dates and application links, plus a map of scholarships near your school.
They also have a $59 decode service that turns an ancestor's service record, copperplate handwriting, army shorthand, into a plain-English Australian story and timeline that students can attach to strengthen their application.

Careers Staff will be at the College from Thursday, 10 December 9:30 am until Friday, 11 December at 4.00 pm to assist/advise students on tertiary selection and change of preferences. It is important that students avail themselves of this opportunity.
