A Visit to the Melbourne Magistrates Court

On Monday 17 August, the Year 12 VCE VM students visited Melbourne Magistrates Court.

This excursion connected to our Unit 4 Literacy focus -Advocacy - which means supporting and speaking up for people and protecting their rights.

We saw advocacy in action by watching the lawyers who represented people accused of crimes, by making sure their circumstances were heard. For example, in Court 3.3, a lawyer represented an accused person who could not attend because she had COVID.

In Court 6.5, the lawyer explained the 25 year old woman's role in a robbery, and helped make sure her situation, including her concern for her young son, was considered as part of a bail application.

We also had the opportunity to attend the Koori court, which was set up very differently from the other courts we went to, and seemed to be a really positive experience for everyone in there.

The experience of attending court showed us how lawyers advocate for people and help ensure that they are treated fairly. It was an eye-opening experience and we all walked away with a greater understanding of the court system and advocacy in general.
