Year 10 Food Studies - South Melbourne Market Excursion

Last week, our Year 10 Food Studies students had a day out exploring the vibrant aisles of the South Melbourne Market. This excursion provided a valuable hands-on look at our current unit on local sustainable food systems.

The day began with an educational tour where students met with local traders specialising in fresh produce, deli goods, chocolate, fish and artisanal sourdough. Students also learned about the markets waste systems including recycling seafood shells to help rebuild Port Phillip Bay.

After completing their fieldwork on local food systems, students enjoyed a diverse lunch featuring everything from gozleme, fresh seafood and the iconic South Melbourne Market Dim Sims. It was a wonderful opportunity to see and taste sustainability in action!
