Celebrating Languages Week
19 May 2023

We celebrated a bumper Languages Week at SHC this year, with many activities taking place at the College and beyond. Languages Week is an important time to reflect on the importance of language learning. Learning a language can benefit students in many ways, including increased inter-cultural awareness, greater understanding of their first language, and increased concentration and memory skills.

Importantly, learning a language is also FUN. Languages Week provided us with a great opportunity to showcase some cultural activities for our French and Japanese classes. Enjoy some photos from these activities:

  • Year 7 French students were treated to a music and mime performance.
  • Year 7 Japanese students participated in a taiko (Japanese drumming) workshop, showing off both their language and drumming skills.
  • Year 8 Japanese students let off some steam in a kendo (Japanese fencing) workshop, where they also learned the importance of self-discipline in Japanese martial arts.
  • Year 9 French students ventured to the Botanic Gardens for some cultural activities with our French exchange students, including trying their hand at Pétanque and sampling some French snacks.
  • Years 10 - 12 French students attended the Monet and Friends exhibition at the Lume in Melbourne, after which they shared lunch and chatted in French with our exchange students.
  • Staff didn’t miss out on the fun, as they were treated to an after-school Taiko (Japanese drumming) workshop assisted by our very own Tankovich sensei.
