Welcome the Sacred Heart College Archives website!

This is an area of the College that many people may not know exists. The College is lucky enough to have in its collection, photographs and items of memorabilia, some dating back to the College’s beginnings in 1889.

Our collection has steadily grown over the years thanks to the wonderful donations from past pupils. Many of the photographs and memorabilia are from their time at the College and others are from their
Parents/Grandparents time here, dating back to 1900. Many of these items came to light during the College’s special celebration days, 1989 Centenary, 2007 One Hundred On High and more recently, 2014 Celebrating 125 Years.

Over the years, the College has seen many changes including The Great Depression and two World Wars, a great acknowledgment to the dedication and hard work of the Sisters of Mercy.

As I look through some of our historical photographs, speak to some of our past pupils from the 30s, 40s and 50s and listen to their stories about their time at the College, I can only imagine how hard life must have been back then. Yet, I hear no complaints.
“Yes’, they say, “the weather was freezing in the winter but Sr Hilary always used to sneak us extra food and hot drinks.”
“Yes, the sisters were strict about our schooling and our etiquette, but they were always fair and supportive.”

As I sit around and listen to a group of ladies who are now in their 70s, 80s and 90s laughing, looking at photographs and reminiscing, their recall amazes me. Thankfully for me, and the College, this is how archives are established and built upon.

Since starting the Archives and the Old Collegians here a few years ago I have had the pleasure of meeting up with some of the most wonderful people. To be able to sit and have a cup of tea and a chat with them, look at old photos, collect their memoirs and then have a wander around the College that has changed so much since their time, to see the look of recognition on their faces and their memories come flooding back indeed makes my job an enviable one.

If you are a past pupil or teacher, or have had an association with the College over the years, I would love to hear from you. Do you have any photographs or memorabilia that you would like to donate or loan (for special occasions) or memoirs you’d like to pass on to the College archives? We still have a lot of unanswered questions and unidentified photographs and would be delighted to have your help.

Have you visited our new College Heritage Building, Chisholm Cottage? We now have a beautiful bluestone building dedicated to housing the College’s historical memorabilia and photographs.  Many of you may remember it as ‘The Old Darby House’.

Call in, we would love to show you around.
